At the sound of that “Mazel Tov” everyone who had a Sunkist in their hand ( those who resisted the temptation of eating it) threw it as hard as they could at the helpless kid standing on the Bima ( stage). After the singing of the last prayer ended and the “Mazel Tov” resonated throughout, the madness began. The unmistakable plastic crinkle would fill the sanctuary as the Bar Mitzvah boy/ Bat mitzvah girl’s premonition grew. ( I would always make sure I took at least two so that I could eat one). The part I most looked forward to would be towards the end of the ceremony when the little cousin or little sister ( which was me at my brothers’ Bar Mitzvah’s) would walk through the isles with a basket of Sunkist fruit gems passing them around to the audience. During my childhood I went to a lot of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs ( a Jewish ceremony for 12 and 13 year olds to represent a coming of age). When I see these little individually wrapped gelatin candy blobs I think of only one thing, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Sunkist Fruit Gems, manufactured by Jelly Belly Candy Co., are a candy classic and Kosher too. Zachary’s current slogan is “since 1950” and the only other writing that accompanies that catchy slogan on their wrapper is allergy information warning you “this product was created in a facility that process products containing soy, dairy, egg, and peanut ingredients.” So all of you allergen freebees enjoy the generic but delicious soft fruit discs. If you want a second opinion, you can read Cybele’s take on them on her site.If you are looking for a Fruit Jel that is colorful, soft and tasty, look no further.ĭon’t get this candy confused with Sunkist fruit gems, because though the two soft sugarcoated gelatin cylinders look almost identical these discs have a much better flavor-consistency combination making the eating of them almost more enjoyable than throwing them. Overall, I think they still get an OM, though I should note these also come individually wrapped in bulk bins, so you can pick and choose your favorite flavors. Blueberry was decent, and orange was nice but could have been punchier. I enjoyed the lemon and grapefruit flavored ones. It had a deep red fruit flavor and some noticeable tannins. Its flavor was more like blueberry jam or that blueberry-ish stuff that they’ll put on your pancakes at IHOP: blueberry-esque rather than like the fresh fruit. Here, too, the finish had an enjoyable bitterness to it.įinally, the maroon gem was blueberry. Grapefruit was pink and tasted just like grapefruit with its characteristic pithiness.

There was a slight bitterness to the finish that I really enjoyed, as it made the flavor feel more genuine. Lemon had a bright citrus zestiness and a positively tangy lemon flavor.

Compared to the Sunkist Orange Slices, which I also got as free samples, it was rather muted in flavor. Orange was mildly sweet with a mellow candied orange flavor that lacked any zesty bite or citrus sourness. It yielded instantly to my bite, and its exposed surfaces were perfectly smooth, with a glossy feel on my tongue.
